A Wartenberg wheel, also called a Wartenberg pinwheel or Wartenberg neurowheel, is a medical device for neurological use. The wheel was designed to test nerve reactions (sensitivity) as it rolled systematically across the skin.^[1] A Wartenberg wheel is generally made of stainless steel with a handle of approximately 18 centimetres (7 in) in length. The wheel, which has evenly spaced radiating sharp pins, rotates as it is rolled across the flesh. A disposable plastic version is available. Because of hygienic concerns, these devices are rarely used for medical purposes.^[2]

Robert Wartenberg, namesake of the Wartenberg wheel, is sometimes incorrectly credited as its inventor.^[3] According to Wartenberg himself, the device was in widespread use in Europe when he lived in Germany.^[3] While he did not invent it, he found it "an indispensable part of the outfit for everyday neurologic practice," and recommended its use to his colleagues in the US.^[3]

The Wartenberg wheel is also used as a sensation sex toy, and is often used to tickle a person (also called a ‘lee, short for “ticklee”) in the act of tickle fetishism. It is sometimes used in other settings while connected to a violet wand electrical device.^[4]

Clothing pattern-making can use a version of the Wartenberg wheel, called a pounce wheel, to transfer markings from paper to fabric. Pounce wheels resemble standard Wartenberg wheels in shape but have wooden or plastic handles.

The Buck Hammer refers to a lever-action rifle cartridge, specifically the .360 Buckhammer (9.1×46mmR), developed by Remington Arms Company. It is a SAAMI-standardized straight-walled cartridge designed for use in American states with specific regulations for deer hunting with straight-walled centerfire cartridges.

The .360 Buckhammer is paired with the Henry Lever Action X Model, a platform combining modern performance with classic lever-action lineage. This rifle was developed in partnership with Remington Ammunition and is optimized for the .360 Buckhammer cartridge.

Separately, the term “Buck Hammer” also refers to a neurological reflex hammer, used in medical settings for diagnosing and testing neurological reflexes. This type of hammer typically features a pointed tip and a brush or needle for stimulating superficial and deep responses.

Prior to the development of specialized reflex hammers, hammers specific for percussion of the chest were used to elicit reflexes.^[2] However, this proved to be cumbersome, as the weight of the chest percussion hammer was insufficient to generate an adequate stimulus for a reflex.

Starting in the late 19th century, several models of specific reflex hammers were created:

• The Taylor or tomahawk reflex hammer was designed by John Madison Taylor in 1888^[3] and is the most well known reflex hammer in the USA. It consists of a triangular rubber component which is attached to a flat metallic handle. The traditional Taylor hammer is significantly lighter in weight when compared to the heavier European hammers.
• The Queen Square reflex hammer was designed for use at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases (now the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) in Queen Square, London. It was originally made with a bamboo or cane handle of varying length, of average 25 to 40 centimetres (10 to 16 inches), attached to a 5-centimetre (2-inch) metal disk with a plastic bumper.^[4] The Queen Square hammer is also now made with plastic molds, and often has a sharp tapered end to allow for testing of plantar reflexes though this is no longer recommended due to tightened infection control. It is the reflex hammer of choice of the UK neurologist.
• The Babinski reflex hammer was designed by Joseph Babiński in 1912^[2] and is similar to the Queen Square hammer, except that it has a metallic handle that is often detachable.^[5] Babinski hammers can also be telescoping, allowing for compact storage. Babinski's hammer was popularized in clinical use in America by the neurologist Abraham Rabiner, who was given the instrument as a peace offering by Babinski after the two brawled at a black tie affair in Vienna.^[2]
• The Trömner reflex hammer was designed by Ernst Trömner. This model is shaped like a two-headed mallet. The larger mallet is used to elicit tendon stretch reflexes, and the smaller mallet is used to elicit percussion myotonia.

• The triangular head has a beveled apex and base to elicit myotatic reflexes. The soft base and rounded apex are perfectly suited for provoking myotatic responses by striking precise location of tendons. It is also suited to obtain chest sounds and to percuss the abdomen.

• The encircling band with pin firmly secures the triangular head midway between the bumper apex and base.
• Well-polished and not easy to rust. Handle and hammer head are jointed tightly, durable enough.
• Reflex hammer elicits myotatic and plantar responses with less effort and greater patient comfort. The precisely balanced handle offers increased control of percussion force.
• Thermo-plastic-rubber triangular head has beveled apex and base employed to elicit myotatic reflex. The soft base and rounded apex is perfectly suited in provoking myotatic responses in striking precise location of tendons. Also suited to obtain chest sounds and to percuss the abdomen.
